Debate topic "Should there be a Universal Basic Income (UBI)?"
|
A Universal Basic Income scheme is a government policy that typically replaces means-tested welfare systems with a single unconditional payment. This idea has a long history; able to trace its origins to various humanist, socialist, and libertarian thinkers over the last several centuries.
People have argued that introducing a UBI would be more efficient than continuing to provide welfare through the current programs, and that doing so contributes to making society more equal by giving people more opportunities. On the other side, there are concerns about the costs of a UBI and what it would mean for the job market and workforce if people are no longer required to work to support themselves. This debate will aim to look at these issues and more.
